Ed isn't much of a show dog. But when his family, the Hubbles, see an ad for a dog show competition, they decide that he could be a great show dog. But will he? The Hubbles' neighbors Mr. and his dog Princess (a prize winning poodle) think not. Of course, the Hubbles disagree. They need to get Ed ready! After teaching Ed a few tricks and giving him a nice bath, the Hubbles decide Ed is ready for the show.... But is he? Does he have a chance of winning? Win or lose, Ed and the Hubbles know what's most important–having fun!

SHOW DOG IS AN INTERNATIONAL READING ASSOCIATION - CHILDREN'S BOOK COUNCIL CHILDREN'S CHOICE FOR 2005!

This is what the International Reading Association says about how the "picks" are chosen:

"Each year, 10,000 schoolchildren read and vote on the newly-published children's and young adults' trade books that they like best. About 700 books are sent to five review teams located in different regions of the United States. Each team consists of a children's literature specialist, who acts as the Team Leader, and one or more classroom teachers or school librarians, plus 2,000 local schoolchildren. Throughout the school year, the books are read to or by the children; their votes are tabulated in March by the Team Leaders and the Children's Book Council, and the approximately 100 most popular titles are announced at the International Reading Association Annual Convention."

Kirkus Reviews - "Ed and the Hubbles will delight young readers, particularly "Henry and Mudge" fans."

School Library Journal"The writing is witty and conversational.... A funny, quirky story."

Booklist- "McCarthy's bold images ...and her goofy-looking characters are several steps above the usual cartoon folk, more varied, and more richly colored. The short text will work well at story hours."

Publishers Weekly-"(Kids) will love rooting for Ed and his slobbery heart of gold"

Chicago Tribune - "Love conquers all, as anyone who owns an Ed knows."

What would your perfect pet look like?

List 7 of your favorite animals. Then write down one part of each animal that makes it your favorite.

Example:

Cow - its fat body

Hawk - its large wings

Frog - its webbed feet

Giraffe - its long legs

Dog - its big wet snout

Ram - its strong curved horns

Pig - its curly tail

Then, combine all the parts and make a picture of what that animal would look like.

Go to the "free stuff" section and follow the directions. You'll need a few nice round rocks and some paint. Check back soon for Show Dog coloring pages and directions to make your own Show Dog mobile!

Below is a drawing of the first dog in space! Check back soon to read all about Laika and the Sputnik project. Unfortunately, this tale doesn't have a happy ending...however, it's a part of our history and Laika helped pave the way for manned space projects. In essence, the little Russian dog was a hero!
